Update #02 – Our trip to the LUMC

Hello World!

On Friday the 7th, we went to the LUMC in Leiden for a very varied day.
First, we had a lecture on the anatomy of the human heart so that we would become more knowledgeable about the subject. We got the opportunity to hold real plastificated hearts in our hands, a totally new experience for us. Out of respect of the relatives, we could not take any pictures.

After the lectures, we conducted an interview with Dr. Eduard Holman, a cardiologist at the LUMC. This was a very helpful interview, because it gave us insight into the doctors’ perspective. For example, he informed us about how he thought Virtual Reality could be used for the education of patients. For the second lecture we learned about different heart defects by looking at preserved hearts.

In the afternoon we had a meeting with the experts. We were able to present our demo in the HTC Vive. They had the opportunity to experience the HTC Vive themselves, so they got a better understanding of what we have been doing the past couple of days. The experts showed a lot of enthusiasm when we discussed our project and the potential of using Virtual Reality. How this meeting went speaks for itself when you see the photo’s and video we made. Enjoy!

Update #01 – The first week

Welcome to our first update!

Last week, our group has been working on several things. We spent a great deal of our time getting familiar with the HTC vive and different software -such as Unity and Blender- that need to be mastered in order to build the prototypes. The results that came out of experimenting with the software were interesting. We filmed some pieces of the work, which you can view below. We also contacted a few people that can help us with getting to know needs of the stakeholders; the patients and their families, and the doctors. Lastly we also brainstormed about ideas that we could use in our prototypes.
